Here are the deviant art personas of Green Goldfish, Purple Rat and Grey Strangebear ... all of them getting ready for some art related business.
Technical stuff: pencil sketch that was inked over using a rotring 0.2 pen and a Muji 0.3 ink pen. Then I worked over the inked drawing with watercolour paints. Finally it was scanned into Photoshop 7. I then cleaned up the levels ... crisped up the colour balance (especially on Purple Rat who looked a little brown in plain watercolour) and added the details on Strangebear's funky Grateful Bed teeshirt design. Total time for finished work ... around 2 hours.
This is so colourful! Lovely texture in GreyBear's fur. PurpleRat looks so damn cool, and I'm impressed that you remebered details such as her tail rings. Lovely. And thank you very much!
Thank you for the praise ... I'm quite pleased with how the picture turned out. I painted this on a friend's dining room table (Paul and Denise ... they are good friend's of Spencer's as well) so I was having to use just the art stuff I had thought on to stuff into my backpack. One of the things I did do was print out the picture of Purple Rat before I left home. My memory might be pretty good for detail, but I'm not that good!
I don't know about you, but I'm now finding it hard not to imagine Spence as a fish, drawing with a pencil gripped in his teeth!
What did Paul and Denise think of our animal alter-egos? And yeah, Spence as a goldfish is stuck in my mind too. And upon taking a closer look at the picture, I spotted Rat's braid you managed to add in! That's so cool...
Denise thought our animal alter-egos looked very cute. Paul wasn't really at the table much. He spent most of the afternoon trying to keep Max and Matthew from running around at top speed. These toddlers have as much energy as an Olympic gold medalist!
At one point Matthew came upto the table and pointed to my watercolour paintbox. He then very carefully explained what I needed to do ... "get the paint from there ... and brush ... and put there (points at my painting)" It was sooooooo cute!
I am sure Spence would prefer to be thought of as a green fish ... it beats being told he was beginning to look like Tony Blair.
Yeah ... I just got the Purple Rat braid in. I did originally draw her with the braid and hair being swept back. It was supposed to indicate the speed they were moving. Then I looked at the picture and decided that Strangebear was plodding along SO SLOWLY that I'd better cut out the wind damage to Purple Rat's hair do ... and drop the braid back downwards. I'll do you a sketch of the high speed "Bear Surfing" Purple Rat if you want!
This is going to sound really cheesey, but I was actually moved by this piece so much that I have tears in my eyes, I think it is something about the bond of friendship which you have captured here. I love this piece, and yes, I would rather be thought of as a green fish than a balding politician with an insincere grin +fav definitely.
Spencer, thank you for the comment (and for adding the picture to your favourites ... as did Phoenix) Since you love the picture so much I'm going to parcel it up and send it to you. You maybe amazed at how un-purple Purple Rat is in real life ... that Photoshop is an amazing tool when colours aren't quite right.
I'll try and find Meg's Dragon to post as well ... she is long overdue that little fella!
